Art of the Ordinary
September 26th, 2005

Mietta Foundation Forum at 45 Downstairs

45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne

Monday 26th September - 5.45pm for 6.00pm

Art is not ordinary - or is it?
Is art in the community impossible or inevitable?
Is art what you make or is it more a matter of what you draw attention to?

Two leading artists, Katy Bowman and Julie Shiels, discuss how ordinary objects and stories become extra-ordinary and how people and communities become engaged in art in unexpected ways.

The discussion will be moderated by academic and theatre artist Dr Alison Richards.

Entry $5

Katy Bowman is a performing artist and performance maker specialising in installation and visual theatre. She has 30 years professional experience as a performer, devisor, designer and director. Acknowledged as an innovator, her work has been presented in a number of award-winning seasons as well as nationally and internationally. Katy is co-creator and director of the Museum of Modern Oddities (MoMO) with Neil Thomas.

Julie Shiels has been working across visual arts, public installation, and story telling, for more than 20 years. Her projects, which are often undertaken as collaborations with specific communities, consistently draw attention to profound moments in the small gestures and forgotten stories of everyday life. Her most recent work was Aunty Alma’s Seat, three bronze milk crates that are a monument to a local Indigenous Elders in St Kilda.

Dr Alison Richards is a performer, performance maker and an internationally recognised cultural theorist. She has published extensively on the social context of Australasian performance and other artistic practices. Her current research project, ‘Performing Community’ traces the nexus between aesthetic and social issues in participatory community-based performance projects.
